  7. Think of a world without cancer. It is a difficult
  8. concept to even begin to comprehend. Those of
  9. us living today have never known such a world.
  10. Cancer is embedded in our literature and our
  11. culture. Years ago we did not talk much about
  12. cancer, and the news that any relatives had it
  13. was kept under wraps, as if having cancer was
  14. some sort of disgrace.
  15.     Yet many diseases that have dominated our
  16. lives and culture, such as tuberculosis, polio
  17. and smallpox, have either diminished as major
  18. health problems or disappeared, like smallpox.
