The Future of Scientific Research and Treatment
Vincent T. DeVita, Jr., MD
Adapted for the Canadian edition
by Richard Hasselback,MD
Think of a world without cancer. It is a difficult
concept to even begin to comprehend. Those of
us living today have never known such a world.
Cancer is embedded in our literature and our
culture. Years ago we did not talk much about
cancer, and the news that any relatives had it
was kept under wraps, as if having cancer was
some sort of disgrace.
Yet many diseases that have dominated our
lives and culture, such as tuberculosis, polio
and smallpox, have either diminished as major
health problems or disappeared, like smallpox.
